BACKGROUND
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new refugee arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE
The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Instructor is responsible for providing group-based instruction to adult refugees with limited English proficiency. This position is responsible for developing and implementing an engaging, effective curriculum that supports refugee acquisition of English language skills that will support financial literacy and employment. The teacher will work closely with the Employment Specialist and other agency staff to insure that clients achieve goals and objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach Vocational English as a Second Language classes involving financial literacy and employment topics
- Assesses students in order to evaluate their progress; Tracks and report student attendance
- Develops VESL curriculum in collaboration with agency staff; this may include the development of sector-specific curriculum and other customized curricula as directed
- Plan for volunteers' meaningful involvement and oversee volunteers working in the ESL classrooms.
- Stays current on best practices, pedagogical approaches, and strategies to engage adult ESL learners
- Coordinates with the Employment Specialist, Site Supervisor, Financial Literacy Program Manager and other relevant staff through regular communication, participation in team meetings, and other activities as requested
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in related subject such as education required; Masters degree preferred
- TESOL (or relevant) certification required
- Experience teaching ESL and developing curriculum strongly preferred
- Experience working with immigrant populations strongly preferred
- Experience teaching Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students. Considerable experience in facilitating student-centered, thematic based teaching strategies.
- Experience with workforce and job training programs preferred
